During the initial stages of recovery, it's crucial to determine whether a hard or soft barrier should be placed around the affected areas, depending on the presence of hazards like existing mold, asbestos, or other contaminants.

Consider seeking assistance from a sister facility or the corporate office for large losses involving an extended recovery period. Additional positions to assist with managing the loss or operation could include Accounting, Facility staff or Project Engineer, Risk Management, and a Safety Officer.

Recovery Steps

  • Infection Control Measures

    Maintain negative pressure, create an airlock vestibule, and install clean mats to remove dirt.

  • Interim Life Safety Measures (ILSM)

    Implement these and file with the local authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) if changes to the means of egress are required.​

  • Air Quality Management

    Use HEPA Air Purifiers and moisture monitor meters to maintain acceptable air quality and humidity levels.​

  • Fire Protection Measures

    If necessary, manage impairments to fire protection systems and restore them at the end of each workday.​

  • Implement Permit Protocols

    Use Wet Work Permits for work on fluid-carrying piping networks and follow existing Hot Work Permit protocols.​

  • Increase Security Patrols

    Do this during off-work hours for added safety.​

  • Contractor Orientation Training

    Ensure contractors participate in the facility’s contractor control program orientation training before starting work.​

  • Water Damage Response Carts

    Have these ready to expedite response and recovery time in a water infiltration event.​
