Lockout and tagout (LOTO) are ways of securing devices and controlling hazardous energy, such as electrical, mechanical or hydraulic energy. LOTO incidents often result in disfiguring or fatal injuries, but these incidents are 100% preventable.
During the fiscal year that ended 9/1/2021, “Control of Hazardous Energy (Lockout/Tagout - LOTO)” was the 6th most frequently cited OSHA standard. It has also appeared in the ‘Top 10’ list of violations for many years. This shows that many employers don’t have the awareness or knowledge to put an effective LOTO program in place.
